Interesting pick by the Lions last night. Although I was sad to see Prince Amukamara get passed on to really recreate one of the more solid defenses in the NFL (also the one with the most Husker alumni), I’m liking this pick the more I think about it.
Yes they did draft the best defensive player in the NFL last year in Suh, but they just snagged one of the best defensive tackles in college football to play alongside Suh. From the games I watched of Auburn, this guy tore apart Alabama’s O-Line and was constantly in Oregon’s backfield. Now teams that only focus on double and triple teaming Suh will have to reevaluate their tactics because it will free up Fairley to get into their backfield.
As far as his character issues are concerned, Detroit is probably the best place that he could have gone. Where is going to go out and party in Detroit? An abandoned factory? Also, with the influence of Schwartz, Suh, and Vanden Bosch, he’ll have hell to pay if he slacks off at any time.
Now all the Lions need is a secondary, an offensive line, and to keep Stafford healthy and the playoffs will surely follow.
